Sustainable Communities
Heartwood is made up of people who have a deep commitment to healthy communities of people, as well as healthy forests and ecosystems. Heartwood supports projects that increase the ability of communities to function in ways that are sustainable and life promoting to the planet. A 2011 mini-grant was awarded to a project whose goal was to build a greenhouse to grow food for a local food pantry in a town struggling with poverty due to the coal mining industry. A 2012 mini-grant went to support the creation of a resource center for citizens of a town being affected by mountain top removal coal mining. Many Heartwood members live on small family farms themselves, and many are involved in educating others on a broad range of sustainable living subjects from food production to permaculture techniques to use of draft horses to how to build your own solar panels.
